VilluVillu (2009) Movie Review

The second film from the 'Pokkiri' combo Vijay and Prabhudeva , 'Villu' is the story of the son erasing the false allegations foisted on his father's career loosely based on the Hindi film 'Soldier'.

Major Saravanan is a honest army officer, killed by four of his colleagues who consider him as an impediment to their anti-national activities and manage to convince the authorities as well as the public that Saravanan was a traitor.

The track shown for about twenty minutes at the start of the film leads us to the actually story and the rest of the film is devoted to the son's (Vijay) revenge actions. What's more the four ex-army officers, who had wronged his father, are now international criminals on the hit-list of Interpol.

Vijay plays the dual roles of Major Saravanan and his son Pughaz. The old get-up hardly suits his face; but for the moustache, his portrayal of the 'father' would have fallen flat. Pugahz is the usual Vijay, with the trademark stubble you associate with him over the years, and with the style and gimmicks. One wonders whether he would change his get-up at all!

The suspense element, present throughout the film, has been well handled by director Prabhudeva. Nayantara offers vast discount on her clothes and is a commoner's delight with her oomph factor. Vadivelu tickles a few laughter here and there.

Devi Sri Prasad's music is just about okay and his foot-tapping numbers might save the day for the film, in the ultimate analysis. His background score is really good. The hair-dos and get-ups attempted by the four villains remind us of some 'fancy dress competitions'. In particular, Anandaraj and Sreeman's make-up looks awkward.

The greatest minus point of 'Villu' is the silence that accompanies Prakashraj on most of the sequences. The actor, known for his electrifying dialogue delivery, has been robbed of his chance to speak on most scenes.

Ranjitha, as the elder Vijay's wife, is convincing. Prakashraj's act of applying tattoo on her forehead is baffling. Geetha and Manoj K. Jeyan are equally good in their portrayals of their assigned roles. Vijay's bashing up of international criminals at the drop of the hat is least convincing.

The climax which is too long, dragging and is boring is definetly a let down for the film.
